“Lunch Angel” Kenny Thompson of the nonprofit organization Feed the Future Forward delivered a $500 check to fellow nonprofit Cy-Hope on Feb. 5 to go toward CFISD’s Lunch Super Hero Account.
The account was established in April 2014 by Thompson, Cy-Hope and the CFISD food service department to benefit students who have exceeded the credit limit on their lunch account.
Thompson, who first came to CFISD in February 2014 while paying off lunch account balances at Horne Elementary School, said he was proud to continue the relationship.
“Cy-Hope jumped on board when we launched Lunch Super Hero, and it’s important to keep pushing forward with these outstanding programs,” Thompson said. “I’m very proud of what Cy-Hope is doing and what Cy-Fair ISD is doing, and we’re going to stand beside you guys.”
Cy-Hope executive director Lynda Zelenka said she appreciates the partnership, which ties in nicely with her organization’s Backpack Program that provides food and clothing for children in 64 CFISD schools to take home each Friday.
“I think it piggybacks off our Backpack Program,” she said. “It’s tragic if students aren’t eating breakfast or lunch, and this support is critical. I think it’s a great collaboration of two organizations coming together and working together. It’s a natural fit.”
Thompson, whose nonprofit recently received official 501(c)(3) status from the IRS, said he is proud of how far Feed the Future Forward has come since it launched one year ago on Feb. 4, 2014.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think we would be here today,” he said. “Cy-Fair, Spring Branch, all the schools we’ve touched—141 schools, over 150,000 schools impacted, seven area districts—it’s incredible.”
Thompson encouraged the Cypress-Fairbanks community to continue to donate to the Lunch Super Hero Account to support the students who are among the 50 percent in CFISD who qualify for free and reduced lunches.
“Every dollar counts for these kids,” he said. “I know in my heart that we can one day remedy this need and find a permanent solution to provide lunch for all students in greater Houston and beyond.”
Those interested in donating to the Lunch Super Hero Account can complete the donation form on the Cy-Hope website and indicate “Lunch Super Hero Account” in the “In Honor Of:” field.
